Can I check in my bags downtown before heading to the airport?
Short answer
Yes — at A1 Taipei Main Station, for same-day Taoyuan departures on six airlines. Drop the bags, ride the MRT empty-handed.
What the service actually is
At the A1 Taipei Main Station stop of the Airport MRT, you can complete check-in and hand over checked luggage for flights departing Taoyuan the same day. The counters run from 06:00 to 21:30.
The participating carriers are China Airlines and Mandarin Airlines, EVA Air and Uni Air, Cathay Pacific, and STARLUX — a list that covers a large share of departures from Taipei.
The two rules that matter
Finish the drop at least three hours before your flight takes off. The bags travel out to the airport without you, and that buffer is what makes the hand-off work.
Do not walk away the moment the bag disappears: wait until it has cleared the X-ray inspection before leaving the check-in area. If a bag needs opening, you have to be standing there.
Why it changes the last day of a trip
The usual final-day problem is the gap between hotel checkout and an evening flight, spent escorting a suitcase. This service dissolves it: check out, drop the bags at A1 in the morning, and spend the day in the city carrying nothing.
Then ride the Airport MRT out with empty hands and go straight through. It is the rare airport procedure that gives you hours back instead of taking them.
