Why is the price for foreigners different?
Short answer
Because it is the published rate, not something decided at the window. A national park charges a foreign adult 200 baht against a Thai adult's 20; the Grand Palace is 500 baht for foreign visitors and free for Thai nationals. It is printed, it is set nationally, and there is nothing to negotiate.
The rates are published, with the gap inside them
National park admission is set nationally and printed as two columns. A Thai adult pays 20 baht and a Thai child 10, with under-threes and over-sixties free. A foreign adult pays 200 baht and a foreign child 100.
The accident insurance that comes with a park ticket is priced the same way — 10 baht for Thai visitors, 40 for foreign ones. It is quoted as a separate line, so a foreign adult should plan on 200 plus 40 rather than 200 flat.
The same shape outside the parks
The Grand Palace publishes 500 baht for foreign visitors, which covers Wat Phra Kaew and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in the same ticket. Thai nationals enter free on presentation of an ID card.
Two unrelated institutions, one structure. That is the useful thing to understand: the number at the window does not move because nobody at the window set it.
What it means on the day
It is not a bargaining position and the person selling the ticket did not choose it, so the conversation people sometimes start there has nowhere to go.
Parks can be booked in advance: the national park department takes advance tickets for 155 parks through its QueQ app. Visitors without a booking are still admitted, but priority goes to those who booked.
