Can you drink the tap water in China?
Short answer
No. Boil it or drink bottled — the kettle in every hotel room is there for exactly this reason.
Boiled water is the default, not a precaution
Drinking water that has been boiled is simply how water is consumed here, by everyone, all the time. It is not a special measure taken by visitors — it is the normal domestic habit, and the infrastructure follows it.
That is why a kettle appears in every hotel room, why offices keep a hot water dispenser, and why people carry vacuum flasks. Once you notice the pattern, the answer to the question is visible everywhere.
What arrives at the table
Restaurants bring hot water or tea rather than a glass of cold tap water. Asking for cold water often gets you a bottle, which is charged for.
Hot water on its own is a normal thing to drink and to ask for, and no one will find the request strange.
Bottled water
Sold everywhere, cheap, and the simplest answer for a day out. Convenience stores, station kiosks and vending machines all carry it.
Hotel rooms usually include a couple of complimentary bottles. Refilling from the tap is the one thing to avoid, however good the hotel is.
Good to know
- Ice in drinks at established restaurants is made from treated water; street stalls are the judgement call
- Hot water is free and available almost anywhere, including on trains
